Globe artichokes are surprisingly popular in gardens. Their leaves are ornamental and the whole plant looks attractive. Not everyone actually eats them though, and the edible buds can be left to mature into beautiful flowers for bees to enjoy. Whatever the reason for growing them, now’s the time to cut off the old stem, pull off old leaves and give the plants a tidy. In cold areas, put some loose straw around them or cover with fleece to protect from cold but not impede air circulation. Leave dividing them until spring.
