MULCH, MULCH, MULCH
Leaf mould and bark chips are two of the best moisture lockers to use on beds and borders. Compost and cocoa shell are also good, too. Add leaf mould or compost now and cover the surface with bark chips or cocoa shell. Repeat the lock-in process in spring and through drought periods after a good, extensive watering session. Keep in the back of your mind that any weeds present will be taking away valuable moisture, so pick them off extremely vigilantly. Another good tip is to mulch the top of your hanging baskets with gravel to trap moisture in.
