Our mower test
Over the next five pages we reveal our results and how we arrived at the scores
We tested 14 machines on their overall performance and reveal what we liked and disliked about them. Each model is marked out of 20 to give it a final score. Finally, we picked our top six Best Buys based on the criteria of value, versatility, handling, best for lawn enthusiasts, small gardens and large gardens, see p86 for these. We also give you tips on the best way to buy a ride-on mower yourself.
How we tested
We carried out our ride-on mower comparison test at Harper Adams University, Shropshire, which specialises in agriculture and rural studies. With help and advice from its experienced machinery team, each model was thoroughly examined and all the features assessed. We then familiarised ourselves with the controls, before driving and manoeuvring to assess control use, accessibility, comfort, handling and turning. Next, mower cut and performance were tested, with all the machines lined up to mow adjacent test strips so they could be assessed side by side. The front-seated Husqvarna – the only example of this type – was also tested on bumpy and sloping ground. Finally, for those mowers with grass collectors, we carried on cutting until full, then emptied one after the other to compare how each performed. In terms of cutting quality, there was actually little to choose between all the test models, but performance, noise and handling turned up some big differences. A huge thank you to the staff at Harper Adams University for all their help, support and technical advice.
