Cordon tomatoes are tall but take up little space at soil level, so why not plant lettuces at their feet? Both like a moist, rich compost, and the lettuces enjoy the light shade cast by the tomatoes. Stand the large tub in your sunniest, most sheltered spot. Plant the tomatoes 20cm apart, with a cane for support, then fill in around them with the lettuce plugs, 10cm apart. Water regularly. Once the flowers appear, start feeding fortnightly with a liquid tomato fertiliser.

Your harvest

Pick the tomatoes as they ripen in summer. With the lettuces, pick a few outer leaves from each plant every few weeks.

Water regularly and generously, especially when tomatoes start to fruit
