This type of prun­ing can be used on other fruit­ing trees dur­ing the dor­mant sea­son. Pears Re­duce vig­or­ous, main stems by around half their length and cut off the thinnest growth to chan­nel en­ergy into more fruit spurs. Quince/ Cy­do­nia Shorten stems to a third of their length. Thin out weak branches to open up the tree and re­duce cases of leaf spot fun­gus. Med­lar The aim is to achieve an open-cen­tred, well-spaced branch frame­work. Lightly prune to main­tain this, re­mov­ing crowded, dis­eased or dead branches. Don’t hard prune ma­ture trees.
