Sow onion seed

Gardeners' World - - Greenhouse -

Growing onions from seed rather than sets gives more choice of varieties – it’s how exhibition onion growers do it. The summer onion crop must be sown this month. Prick out the seedlings as soon as they can be handled and grow them on in the greenhouse before planting into your veg patch.

1 FILL a seed tray with loam-based seed compost. Level the surface and firm gently with a flat board before soaking in tepid water.

2 SOW the onion seed onto the moist surface of the compost, sieve a fine layer of compost over the seed, then press it gently.
