Give soil a boost

Gardeners' World - - Fruit & Veg -

A mulch of manure or garden compost will not only improve your soil’s structure and nutrient levels, it will also add microorganisms that are vital for healthy plant growth. The vegetable plot needs this more than permanently planted borders, because regular cropping depletes the soil of organic matter and nutrients. Simply spread the composted organic matter on the soil surface, where worms and bugs will drag it into the root zone over the coming weeks, so your soil is in good shape for planting in spring.

Improve next year’s crops by adding organic matter to soil
