Pruning shrub roses

START BY removing all dead, diseased and damaged wood and cutting any twiggy growth back to the main shoot. Look for stems that are rubbing and remove the weaker one. Then open up the centre of the plant, cutting out crowded stems to let in light and air. Finally reduce stems and branches by up to a third.
