Sow broad beans

-

Broad bean plants will survive all but the hardest frosts, so seeds started in trays now can be planted out when they are big enough. Growing in trays improves germination if you have heavy soil and it protects the seed from mice. Choose a modular tray with large cells and fill with multi-purpose compost. Sow the seed with the short dark scar at the bottom. Press it into the loose compost and cover with 2cm of compost. Soak, then place in a frame or cold greenhouse to germinate. Plant outside in late March and you should have your first crop of beans ready to eat by the end of May.
