Sow carrots under fleece

-

Carrots germinate at temperatures above 7°C ,so early sowings in cold soil need some help. Choose the area with the most winter sun and fork through the surface to aerate and warm the upper layers of soil. Pick a sunny day for sowing and rake the surface before using the edge of a hoe to draw a drill 2cm deep. Water the bottom of the drill then sow along the line. Rake a 1cm covering of the soil back over the seed, then tamp it down along the drill with the back of the rake but leave the soil between the drills loose. Cover with fleece to protect the seedlings.
