Sitting comfortably

Taking on simple landscaping projects, like building a terrace, gives you a sense of achievement and saves you money – just follow Adam’s easy steps

Since moving to our new garden, I have been working out where the special places are to just stop and enjoy a moment. I refer to these as pause points, and most tend to be seating areas. They need to look good, but they need to make you feel something, too. I place seating among planting, if I can, as the moment you sit down and your eyeline drops, you’ll enjoy your plants in a very different way.

The first thing to work out are the spots that you are drawn to. I have a lovely area that catches the evening sun, a special place to spend a few moments with a cup of tea or something stronger. Then comes the hard landscaping. Many of us can get nervous and worry that we can’t do it, but with a little guidance it’s not hard to build your own terrace – and the satisfaction you will have when you sit and enjoy that drink will be amazing.

Most landscaping projects are not that complicated. The key things are to have the right tools and be sure about your measurements before you get going. Don’t feel pressured to rush a project – break it down into steps and take your time. You will find the process rewarding, plus, by doing the work yourself, you’ll save a few quid, too! It’s worth having a go, whatever your level of experience.

One of the simplest projects to start with is laying a brick terrace. This will give you a good understanding of preparing your site, creating a good base and, with the bricks being relatively small and light, the work isn’t too heavy.
