What’s in a name?
I have just read James Alexander-Sinclair’s article (We love, December issue) and think I can solve the mystery relating to the origin of the name Berberis ‘Cheal’s Scarlet’. Cheals was a garden centre in Crawley, now Squire’s Garden Centre, Crawley. The garden centre building was Grade II-Listed in 1948 when it was under Cheals’ ownership. In fact, it was so well known that the roundabout on the A23/Horsham Road is still called Cheals Roundabout!
