Sow lettuce seeds now

-

Sow the first lettuces to kick off a continuous supply of pickings through the year. Sow in modules or fibre pots under cover to have plants ready to plant outside in four to six weeks’ time. You can also sow outdoors, but use cloches until next month when the soil has warmed up.

The cloche gives protection from birds that will graze on the fresh young seedlings, but start your campaign to protect seedlings from slugs too. Good varieties to start now include the cut-and-come again types like ‘Salad Bowl’ and cos varieties, which will both grow well.
