Q How and when can I reduce the size of my large viburnum?

AMATT SAYS Viburnum tinus is very robust and vigorous shrub that can cope with being pruned to ground level and will regrow readily. Prune it in late spring, once there is no danger of frost and before birds start nesting. Work out what height you would like it to be in the long term, then cut back to at least 30cm below that, to allow for strong regrowth. Pruning in spring also means you won’t have to look at a bare shrub and pruning cuts for too long.

After pruning, feed with a general slow-release fertiliser, mulch with garden compost and water during dry periods. In future years, cut it back every spring to keep it within its allotted space.
