Q What can I plant in with my fiddle-leaf fig?
Arlane Fleming, Ayrshire
AHUMAIRA SAYS The fiddleleaf fig (Ficus lyrata) makes an attractive house plant, with large glossy leaves. But it can be tricky to look after – only water once the compost is dry to the touch, as they really don’t like wet feet. Also, as with most house plants, try to avoid fluctuations in temperature.
Adding other plants to the same pot isn’t generally recommended, although I have seen sedums used in this way. Instead, group other plants, in separate pots, around it. Choose plants that like the same conditions, such as the Swiss cheese plant (Monstera deliciosa), mother-in-law’s tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata) and even a bird-of-paradise (Strelitzia nicolai). They all like bright but not direct sunlight, and a bit of humidity, so mist well.
