Take hardwood cuttings of dogwoods if buds are yet to burst

Hand mix (wearing gloves) bagged compost, almost like mixing flour, to break up lumps and let lots of air in

Make sure seed compost is not too wet or heavy. If you can squeeze water out of it before sowing, it is too wet

Check perennials for emerging growth, which can soon be used for basal stem cuttings
