Q Can I use recycled polystyrene beads in potting compost?

-

Mike, Bristol

A BOB SAYS Well it’s possible but not advisable as they may be ‘polluted’ with whatever was used in their prior life, as well as possibly breaking down into toxins and micro-particles themselves. They will lighten a compost rather too much, reduce the effective water holding capacity and will probably float out when watered.
