Start off onion sets

-

Plant onion sets straight into prepared ground now. Sets are supplied as small, dormant, immature onions, which will root in and grow away fast. An alternative way to grow onions is to have sown seed under glass earlier in the year and grown on the young plants before planting them out into the veg bed.

Rake the soil level, then space the sets 10cm apart in the row, with rows 30cm apart to maximise root growth.

Using a trowel, plant the bulbs by sitting them pointed end up and firming in with just the top above the surface. Never press the bulb in hard as you risk damaging the base. Keep your eye on them as they establish and replant if birds pull them out.
