How can I get the first truss on my tomatoes low down?

- Cedric, by email

PIPPA SAYS The formation of the first truss and its position on the tomato plants is determined by many things, particularly the variety, though having the trusses a little higher is a good thing, reducing the risk of soil splash, excess moisture and stagnant air, which may encourage problems such as grey mould. It also makes picking easier and reduces damage from birds and rodents.

If light levels are very high in my greenhouse, trusses start to form slightly lower, whereas if light isn’t excessive, they are slightly higher – but this is probably because the plant is more inclined to be drawn or leggy. So, try creating some light shade at the base, mimicking the effect of a brick-based greenhouse.
