Which plants can I put in pots by a north wall for winter cheer?

- Stephanie, by email

HUMAIRA SAYS Plants in pots are possible for cheering up a north wall, but they need plenty of watering and can become stressed. It may help if you could break through the paving or take up paving slabs to plant into the ground, rather than growing in pots. If not, my plant suggestions for winter pots include the Japanese quince, Chaenomeles x superba ‘Pink Lady’, which is deciduous and has dusky-pink flowers from March to May. Also try a winter-flowering clematis such as my favourite Clematis cirrhosa var. purpurescens ‘Freckles’, which has raspberryspeckled flowers from December to February – and, not only is it evergreen, but it’s fragrant, too!

My final suggestion is to use jolly winter berries to brighten up your wall, such as Pyracantha coccinea ‘Red Star’, which flowers in spring and summer, and has bright-red berries in autumn and winter.
