Beached whale inspires award-winning plant pots

-

A plant pot made from recycled nylon rope and fishing nets pulled from the oceans has won the first RHS Chelsea Sustainable Garden Product of the Year Award. Scottish diver Ally Mitchell began making Ocean Plastic pots after a sperm whale washed up on the Isle of Harris with 100kg of rope, fishing net and plastic debris in its stomach. Ally is now recycling 60 tonnes of discarded nets every week. “You’re growing pollinator-friendly plants in what was plastic waste,” he says. “It’s turning a negative into a positive.” oceanplasticpots.com
