Other plants to prune now

-

After a general tidy-up there are still several plants to focus on for pruning, which will moderate further growth, improve their shapes for winter and help to keep them under control next year.

FOXGLOVES Cut the flower stems right down to the basal rosette of leaves to control seeding and extend the plant’s lifetime.

TWISTED HAZEL Corylus avellana ‘Contorta’ is grafted onto a rootstock, which sends up straight suckers. Cut them out to keep the twisted shape.

ROSES Keep repeat-flowering roses going for as long as possible by continuing to deadhead the blooms as each one goes over.

PLUMS AND CHERRIES Tree and bush forms should be thinned now, and new shoots on trained forms can be pruned by two thirds to a spur.
