Summer spur pruning is a good technique to reduce vigour and stimulate next year’s fruit or flowers on many productive plants. Grapevines, gooseberri­es, and all cordon, espalier and fan-trained fruits are spur pruned. Always allow some time for sideshoots to grow out and energise the plant before cutting them back. Enjoy the added bonus of removing pests like aphids that feed on the softest shoots!
