How readers helped to create our front covers
A dedicated group of five readers worked with the Art Director and Picture Editor to select images for our subscriber and newsstand front covers. Editor, Lucy, followed this with a session on honing the words that appear on both covers.
Taking part in the GW Reader Takeover because offered the chance to indulge in something I love, flex my creativity and take on a challenge. It was interesting how our own gardening goals and experiences shaped our selections. It made me realise that we all just want one thing from gardening – the chance to be optimistic. Whether it’s to grow something new, adapt to changing needs, create a sanctuary or simply preserve and protect, the images, stories and advice in the magazine all foster hope and confidence that we can do or discover something to make our own world a bit more beautiful, when we know how. Emily Keen was part of a reader group that chose our front cover images and worked on the words. Meet our other cover panellists:
“I love watching increasing varieties of birds visiting the feeders and I’m hoping it becomes a ‘must visit’ spot for local wildlife. I love the creativity and interaction with nature from gardening.” Carol Eldridge, Cornwall
“I can’t think of anything more satisfying than eating something you’ve grown from seed. Every step is just a series of mini triumphs, from germination to harvest.” Richard Tatnall, Bristol
“The pandemic gave me the chance to throw myself into gardening in a big way. I have a busy and fast-paced job, so having more time at home gave further opportunity for me to do just that.” Hayley Hale, Worcs
“I‘m a lockdown gardener, so still pretty new to it all. However, I love the learning and sense of achievement that comes with every element of gardening.” Jennifer O’Donnell, Glos
