Jobs around the allotment

-

Slugs. There, I said it again! Evening visits are now carried out armed with a couple of bottles of the cheapest cider poured into the slug trap, an organic way to control the pest. Next, I get into the corn block and shake the stalks violently – this helps the corn pollen to drop onto the swelling cob’s fresh tassels. I designate the same day each week to feeding the plants, using my homemade high-potash comfrey or liquid seaweed for all flowering plants and nettle (high in nitrogen) for the brassica varieties. Finally, because I plan to save seeds, I’ll tie a small piece of string on the chosen fruit or pod that I’d like to seed save from so that no-one cuts them off by mistake when harvesting the crops.
