MARMALADE HIGHS

-

Some plants serve as powerful reminders: maybe a memory of a doomed love affair or even a particular flavour of crisps. When I think of this rudbeckia I immediately start singing, "He met Marmalade down in old Moulin Rouge, struttin' her stuff on the street", which is of course the lyric to Lady Marmalade. The Moulin Rouge version is a stormer — "Gitchie, Gitchie, ya-ya, da-da". Oh yes indeed.

Rudbeckia hirta ‘Marmalade’

Short lived bushy perennial, although often grown as an annual. Excellent for a late hit of colour. Sow seed on a heat mat in spring. Good in a vase.
