Weeding unearths a long-lost treasure

Clearing undergrowt­h at the end of his garden, a Birmingham man was ‘gobsmacked’ to discover what he thought was an old shed is in fact a near-intact 18th-century folly. Garden historian and GW presenter Advolly Richmond helped to identify the 350year-old shell house, which is decorated with clams, razor shells and mother of pearl, as well as sheep’s knucklebon­es. “We squealed when we saw it,” she said. “It’s amazing that something like this can just be hidden away.”
