Jobs around the allotment

-

The cool September breeze brings the plot into perspective after some sizzling summer days in August. In the cottage flower bed, sunflower seedheads need rescuing from the hoarding squirrels – the seeds make a delicious addition to

winter salads. As the winds slowly start to pick up this month, I’ll secure the netting around my brassica plants, as birds are likely to get tangled up in it if it’s loose. Now is the time to

sow spring cabbage seeds either in the unheated greenhouse or the cold frame, giving them a nice head start before planting out in late winter or early spring. My daikon radishes have made a welcome arrival from last month’s sowing. I shall thin them out to encourage thicker and juicier roots.

?? ?? While spring radishes need thinning to 2-4cm, the larger daikon variety needs approx. 8-10cm so the roots can grow to their full potential
