Time it right

-

It’s usually fine to deadhead now, but go easy on the secateurs in autumn, as pruning can stimulate soft new growth that won’t have time to toughen up before winter and may then die. Any dieback on branch tips increases the risk of fungal or bacterial infections, which can spread down the stems. Many plants are better pruned when in active growth in spring or summer, or when dormant in winter, so do some research before cutting to see if you should wait.
