How to choose a cordless hedge trimmer

Before choosing your cordless hedge trimmer, consider the following points

-

What are you cutting?

It’s important to match the hedge to the trimmer. Consider the diameter of the branches to ensure the cutting capacity (the gap between the blade teeth) can cope, as well as the size and height of your hedge. Trimmers with shorter blades are generally lighter and easier to handle, but they will take longer to get the job done if your hedge is large. If you have a high hedge, topiary or shaped hedging, then a rotating handle can be helpful. With a choice of three cutting angles, rotating through 180°, it aids manoeuvrability and makes it easier to cut above shoulder height.

What is the battery charge time and run time?

To avoid the frustration of a battery running out halfway through the job, check the battery run time will allow you to cut your hedge in one go, as capacity can vary enormously. Some brands supply more than one, which effectively doubles the run time, while others have a short enough charge time that you can be ready to go again after just a short break.

Is the trimmer easy to use?

Cordless tools are usually simple to start and use, but budget models tend to need a little assembly before use, which can be fiddly. Blade covers can vary – thin, flexible ones may be hard to fit.

Which safety features does it have? Cordless hedge trimmers are very easy to start, and most are light, so if children are around then some safety features are important. Having two starting switches will ensure it doesn’t suddenly turn on and some brands also have a safety key, which can be kept in a drawer when not in use.

Are there any extra features?

If your hedge is low or near a wall or fence, look for one with tip protection on the blade to prevent both the trimmer and your structures being damaged. For easy storage, some have a slot or hole at the end of the blade so you can hang it up safely out of the way.

What do you get for your money? Many trimmers are part of a brand battery system, which means the battery and charger can be swapped between other tools in the range, for DIY as well as gardening. This will save you money when buying additional cordless tools in the future.
