Scarify and aerate your lawn

-

Removal of thatch by scarifying lets more moisture, oxygen and nutrients access the soil and revives your turf. Moss should be treated first if it’s a problem. Mow beforehand and scarify by using a spring-tined rake, or, for larger lawns, a small powered machine. A large volume of loose material often results.

Once the thatch is removed, mow again in the opposite direction to the prescarify mow. Aerate, by spiking the lawn with a fork, then apply some top dressing – a mix of topsoil, compost and sand – onto the lawn with a broom or back of a rake. Feed with an autumn formulated, low-nitrogen lawn food.
