Growing together

Since moving to a McCarthy Stone development, Maureen Apsinall has had more opportunities to enjoy her hobbies and make new friends

“I’ve always been green-fingered. So, last spring, I jumped at the opportunity to spend even more time outdoors,” laughs Maureen Aspinall, a homeowner at McCarthy Stone’s Shepheard’s House development in Kent.

“It wasn’t long before several other ladies joined in. We named ourselves ‘The Land Girls’, and together, we found immense joy in tending to the outdoor space, and undertaking new and exciting projects. I think it’s a perfect example of the strong community spirit you’ll find here,” she says. “Now, more than a year later, we still enjoy gardening together – though as our newest member is male, we may have to rethink our name!”

Because the on-site garden is professionally managed, homeowners don’t have to worry about any of the day-to-day maintenance, but they are encouraged to get involved as much as they choose. “We’ve just completed our latest project, which involved creating a peaceful seating area called Wisteria Walk,” Maureen enthuses. “It’s rewarding to see people enjoy the space and know that our efforts have paid off.”

Life, well lived

With regular planned social events, the homeowners at Shepheard’s House have endless opportunities to socialise. Maureen loves to take part in the weekly quizzes, as well as the lively music nights. And, as someone who never shies away from a good party, you’ll find her at the forefront of every festivity. “Last Halloween, my friends and I dressed up as witches and held a little outdoor gathering. We were quite a sight to behold! When Christmas came around, we put on elf costumes and delivered sweets to our neighbours. I think everyone appreciated the gesture, especially because it was at a time when we all needed some extra joy.”

Maureen welcomes any opportunity to celebrate, but the friendly atmosphere at Shepheard’s House lives on long after the party ends. “You only need to take your bins out to bump into someone who’s up for a chat,” she says. “It really is impossible to feel lonely here.”

Over to you

“I’d highly recommend moving to a McCarthy Stone development,” Maureen says. “It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made for myself.” If, like Maureen, you’re looking to begin a new and exciting chapter in your life, you can explore the one-and-two-bedroom apartments and bungalows available to rent* or buy at the many different McCarthy Stone developments across the nation.
