There are other shrubs that need similar careful treatment at this time of year to keep them in check. They include:

■ Roses – reduce top growth and remove any dead or diseased stems, especially if you’re planning on moving the plant. Deadhead any late blooms, unless you want to keep the hips.

■ Buddleia – deadhead, then prune to remove any top-heavy growth that is crowding out other plants.
