Sweet box is used to build the planting in this combination as it has such good shape. It also has a wonderful scent. The fern brings contrast both in shape and leaf finish. The aster then adds a soft, delicate and rather unruly feel to the scene. This group likes a spot in full sun or partial shade.

Sweet box

Sarcococca hookeriana has tiny but very fragrant white flowers followed by black berries. It’s a compact evergreen shrub with small, deep green leaves, and can be clipped if need be. Flowers December to March

Eurybia divaricata

This dainty little wood aster carries masses of small white flowers. It does well in shade or sun. Unlike many asters, this little beauty doesn’t develop powdery mildew – what’s not to love! Flowers June to October

H x S 60cm x 60cm

Hart’s tongue fern

Our native Asplenium scolopendrium really catches the eye. I use it in my woodland area, but it also works well in pots. It holds its leaves all year and contrasts well with the other plants. H x S 60cm x 60cm
