Adam’s top pot tips
K I always start with peat-free multi-purpose compost, then add top soil, grit, sand or composted bark, depending on the plants.
K When buying a single plant for a pot,
choose a larger one for instant structure.
K I feed twice a year with liquid fertiliser,
rather than adding slow-release fertiliser.
K Pots don’t tend to need much watering
through the winter months.
K Weed regularly and remove faded leaves. Deadhead flowers, unless they form attractive seedheads for winter interest.
K If a plant is staying in its pot long term, check its root system once a year to make sure it isn’t congested. If it is, move the plant to a new pot about 5cm larger.
