This is the time of year when the grasses are at the forefront. All summer they have been a stalwart backing group to the colour and flower but now they shrug off their dowdy ways and strut, glistening like sequinned dancers in the pale October sunshine. This is a particular favourite of mine as the raindrops catch in the bottle-brush flower and sparkle like diamonds in the shimmering light. Pennisetum alopecuroi­des ‘Hameln’ May need a bit of protection in colder parts of the country. Sun and good drainage are essential. H x S 70cm x 60cm
