Arm yourself with loppers, a folding pruning saw and secateurs. These should be adequate for most garden pruning tasks. Secateurs are convenient for cutting small branches, but as soon as a twig becomes too thick to cut easily with them swap to your loppers or pruning saw. Keep your tools clean and sharp.
