Top alpines and succulents with gravel

Trim off any dead leaves or old flower stems before mulching alpines and succulents with clean, fresh gravel or stone chippings. Garden centres sell bags of small-graded grit or limestone chippings for this purpose. Adding a 1cm layer will protect the base of the stem from rotting and looks neat for the winter.
