Gardeners help map winter drought
Scientists are warning drought is now a danger in winter as well as summer due to weather extremes caused by climate change.
The Drought Risk and You (DRY) project is collecting observations from gardeners across the country to build resources for coping better with drought. Lead scientist Professor Lindsey McEwen, of the University of the West of England, says gardeners notice early signs of drought, such as dry soil, sooner. “It’s really important to have eyes on the ground observing what’s happening,” she says.
