DOGWOODS Leave the colourful stems of Cornus to enjoy over winter, then prune in spring.

CLIMBING HYDRANGEA Unlike most hydrangeas, Hydrangea petiolaris should be pruned straight after flowering in late summer.

DECIDUOUS GRASSES Wait and cut back in early spring to protect the crown from frost.

EVERGREEN GRASSES There is no need to prune these at all.

HIBISCUS Prune in winter, but leave it as late as possible to minimise the chance of frost damage.

CHERRIES, PLUMS AND PEACHES Prunus are prone to fungal diseases if pruned in winter, so wait until spring or summer.
