Plant garlic

Buy and plant garlic now to harvest in July. It’s best to choose UK-bred varieties that are suited to our climate, such as ‘Solent Wight’ and ‘Early Purple Wight’.‘Thermidrome’ and ‘Marco’ are very reliable here too.

Select a sunny planting site with free-draining soil. Split the bulbs into separate cloves and plant in a hole 8-10cm deep, spacing them 20cm apart. Keep the area free of weeds and apply a general fertiliser in spring.
