Eat your beets

Harvest beetroot from the veg patch as you need it – it’s perfectly hardy so can be kept outside until early spring. But if you have pests like mice nibbling the top of the roots, lift and store in boxes of sand or dry organic matter somewhere cold and dry.

The ground where beetroot has been lifted can be planted with garlic (see above) or sown now with broad beans or early peas, but protect those from mice too.
