Don’t forget that not everything needs to be colourful in order to sparkle this month. Shards of glinting frost on seedheads and the fading stems of grasses can be just as life affirming. chey are also excellent for foraging birds and hibernatin­g beetles, so don’t let your garden be too tidy!

Symphyotri­chum ‘Little Carlow’

In late summer this has daisy flowers the colour of washed denim. Stands well into winter. Divide in spring. HxS 80cm x 70cm

Chionochlo­a rubra

Tufty evergreen grass. Cut back old stems in early spring. Propagate from seed or division.
