Edwardian garden at risk
A ‘lost’ Edwardian garden, once among the country’s finest, is on the At Risk register after a century-long slide into dereliction. The fabulous original garden at Warley Place, Essex, was created by plantswoman Ellen Willmott, an early exponent of ‘wild gardening’. It is has been a nature reserve since 1977, managed by Essex Wildlife Trust volunteers. Efforts are now under way to conserve what remains. “The structure is still there,” says local amateur garden historian Ailsa Wildig. “It has a magical atmosphere.” Discover more about Warley Place at bit.ly/warley-place-history
