How to choose
◼ Price often reflects quality with peat-free. Composts containing ingredients sourced in the UK from local and sustainable supplies are often more expensive, as are those accredited by the Soil Association, FSC, etc.
◼ Choose the right compost for the job. Peat-free ranges have expanded hugely and, along with multipurpose, many now include tailored composts for specific uses, such as seed sowing, container growing and growing bags, as well as for cultivating particular plants, from veg and citrus to ericaceous and bulbs. Always check the label before buying for the suitability of the compost for a particular purpose; peat-free soil conditioners, for example, are for working into the soil rather than potting or seeds.
◼ Look for bags that have been stored under cover rather than outside where they can get wet – these will stay fresher for longer – and avoid tatty or tired-looking bags.
