Take hardwood cuttings of shrubs

-

Prepare a sheltered spot in the garden to root hardwood cuttings. Deciduous shrubs such as cornus, buddleia, philadelphus, elder and weigela root easily using this method.

Make a V-shaped trench by cutting into the soil with a spade. Line the base with grit so that the cuttings don’t get waterlogged. From last year’s growth, make straight cuttings about 20cm long with a bud at the top and the bottom. Press each cutting into the trench and firm the soil back in. They’ll root over spring and be ready to move next autumn.
