flower again next year?
Q How do I get my Christmas amaryllis to Paul Masters, by email
CHRISTINE SAYS Many say it is not worth trying to save these bulbs for another year. I disagree and have for some time now kept bulbs going for several years.
This is a beautiful bulb for the Christmas period and adds much to the home at that time of the year. Once flowering is over, I remove just the flowers, not the flowering stems. This prevents any seed formation, which would weaken the bulb. Continue to water and feed with a potash-rich fertiliser, until late July and then allow the compost to dry out.
The foliage will turn yellow and die away. Move to a warm spot at about 17°C in late September and start watering once new growth appears. I re-pot every two or three years depending on how large the bulb develops.
