The great thing about containers is their versatilit­y – both in terms of their contents and the fact that they are portable and can be moved around to change the scene.

Hanging baskets suspended in sunny spots are useful for trailing tomato plants, especially the cherry tomato varieties, which produce large numbers of bite-sized fruits. Herbs such as marjoram, thyme and parsley will grow happily there, too.

Vegetables and herbs in containers are especially useful if grown near to the kitchen door where harvesting becomes easy and convenient, especially when the weather is wet.
