Step by step: topiary

-

Late spring is an ideal time to get back some clarity and definition with our evergreen topiary, ready for the summer. We’re past the worst of the winter weather so we can proceed with confidence as we trim and sharpen up those clipped shapes.

1

THERE may be a few long stems that have rocketed from your desired shape and will become dominant unless you deal with them now. Prune back to within the shape or at their origin.

2

REGAIN that definition by trimming the stems to your desired shape and take this opportunity to stand back and look from all angles as you go to make sure you’re achieving symmetry and balance.

3

MOST standard topiary shapes have a clear trunk or stem before the canopy. Plants will try to produce leaves along this main stem, or their branches may hang down – these should be removed.
