The Chelsea Chop

This technique enables you to manipulate the flowering of your herbaceous perennials. The phlox above and right was cut back in late May (about the time of the RHS Flower Show) while the others surrounding it were left and so flowered earlier. Reducing shoot height like this results in more, smaller and later blooms.
